Who should Obama nominate?

With John Paul Stevens announced retirement at the end of this Court term, who should President Obama appoint to take his place? Republicans have warned him that they might filibuster his nominee if he chooses someone too liberal. Below are links that provide information on some of his potential choices. Read over them and indicate which you think would be his best choice.

Diane Wood
Merrick Garland
Elana Kagan
Pamela Karlan
Kathleen Sullivan

This article reviews some of the potential candidates when Justice David Souter retired last year and was replaced by Sonia Sotomayor.

  1. Ok, I'll be the guinea pig on this one.

I don't like any of them. I long for the days when the best candidates were looked at, not the ones to fill a quota, cross a bridge, or make political points. President Obama should choose the best qualified candidate. One that is moderate, will not try to legislate from the bench, and one that believes the Constitution should be protected.
I was glad to see that Cass Sunstein was not on this current list, but disheartened that he's even been considered at all. That man believes that a specific animal has rights, and that we as humans do not have the right to eject this particular animal from our homes, much less kill it. I am speaking of rats. Mr. Sunstein believes in nudging people around to his beliefs, which (to me) translates into legislating from the bench. I don't want him anywhere near the Supreme Court. I didn't even want him confirmed to the position he currently holds.

  3. I think that Elana Kagan would be a good choice for Obama to nominate for Supreme Court. First off, she is relatively young compared to the others, which I think is a plus. She is a very smart woman. However, she is a bit more conservative than Justice Stevens. I think that she will do will because of her political experienced and has a strong personality.

  4. I would like to see Diane Wood to become the next member to join the Supreme Court. I agree with most of her past rulings and she has has the ability to get her point of view heard and respected.

  5. Upon reading the selected nominees, I feel Elana Kagan would be a good choice for nomination for Supreme Court. I think that even though she is a liberal, she is more of a "middle" liberal. Even though her background in law is not as extensive as some of the other nominees, I believe she could have the experience to make proper judgement on our laws today. Because of her background, in which some may say she needs more experience, she may be more open-minded to what is taking place in society today in which she will make her judicial decisions. I do not feel that she would be as set in her decision making if she were not able to be open-minded. By being more of a "middle" liberal, approval of her nomination would probably be fairly swift in both the House and the Senate.
